Revision rhinoplasty

General information

Benefits of ultrasonic rhinoplasty

What makes revision rhinoplasty a different procedure?

Key considerations for revision rhinoplasty

What is it?

Rhinoplasty is one of the procedures that require more revisions or adjustments after a first surgery. That is to say, many consider rhinoplasty as a two-stage surgery due to some adjustments or details that must be corrected after the first event.

Secondary rhinoplasty focuses on trying to correct asymmetries or alterations due to poor internal healing in the nose. Similarly, rhinoplasties performed on patients who have a history of hyaluronic acid injection for rhino modeling are considered secondary rhinoplasties because of the effect hyaluronic acid has of making tissues stick together as a scar does.

Alternative or additional treatments

Secondary rhinoplasty is usually a procedure that is not associated with performing other cosmetic procedures other than primary rhinoplasty. However, many cases of secondary rhinoplasty require taking a piece of the patient's own rib to modify the nasal structure when necessary.

Candidates

They are women or men who are dissatisfied with the shape of their nose, deviations, or alterations in breathing secondary to previous nasal surgery or injection of hyaluronic acid.

What makes revision rhinoplasty a different procedure?

Revision rhinoplasty is often more complex than the initial procedure due to several factors:

  • Scar Tissue:  The presence of scar tissue from the first surgery can make the  procedure more challenging and limit the surgeon’s ability to reshape  the nose.

  • Weakened Structures: Cartilage  and bone may have been altered or weakened during the first surgery,  requiring the use of grafts (often taken from the ear or rib) to rebuild  the nose.

  • Higher Risk of Complications:  The altered anatomy and scar tissue increase the risk of complications,  making it essential to choose a highly skilled and experienced surgeon.

Key considerations for revision rhinoplasty

  1. Timing:
    • It’s crucial  to wait until the nose has fully healed from the first surgery, which  can take up to a year or more. Rushing into a revision can lead to  further complications.

  1. Choosing the Right Surgeon:
    • Revision  rhinoplasty requires a surgeon with specialized expertise in nasal  anatomy and complex reconstructive techniques. Look for a  board-certified plastic surgeon or ENT surgeon.

  1. Realistic Expectations:
    • Patients  should understand that revision rhinoplasty may not achieve perfection  but can significantly improve both the appearance and function of the  nose.

  1. Preparation and Recovery:
    • The  recovery process for revision rhinoplasty is often longer and more  uncomfortable than the initial surgery. Patients should plan for  adequate downtime and follow their surgeon’s post-operative instructions  carefully. And remember that most revision cases require a rib cartilage harvest.
