Excess fat and skin in the abdominal region located below the navel is a situation that frequently occurs in patients who have had pregnancies, or who have lost weight quickly by surgical methods such as a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. This excess skin and fat cannot be removed with exercise.
Tummy tuck also known as abdominoplasty consists of removing excess skin and fat by repositioning the navel in a new site of the abdominal wall.
7 days
Deep sedation and spinal block
1 week. Requires avoiding physical efforts for 4 weeks.
Tummy tuck is frequently performed and almost always linked to body liposuction. Also, it is common to take advantage of the procedure to improve breast aesthetics with implants or breast lift with or without implants. In addition, the fat removed during liposuction is used to improve the contour of the buttocks and hips (gluteal augmentation).
Sometimes the excess skin extends to the posterior region of the abdomen (or lower back) and requires extending this scar to that area.
This is a procedure similar to tummy tuck but in lower body lift, the incision and skin resection goes beyond to the region of the lower back and this allows the surgeon to remove the excess skin from the anterior part of the abdomen and the posterior part (lower back).
This creates a lifting effect of the lower part of the body (buttocks) and flatens the abdomen.
Recovery is no diferent than that of a regular tummy tuck.
This procedure helps a lot to recover body shape after a weight loss procedure such as gastric sleeve or gastric bypass.
Lower body lift procedures have increased over the last few years since a lot of patients are losing weight due to bariatric surgery.
The primary candidates for tummy tuck with guaranteed visible results are individuals with a relatively good body shape who present an accumulation of fat and excess skin in the abdomen. Both men and women who, despite dieting and/or physical exercise, cannot resolve the problem of sagging, swelling, and bulging in the abdomen.
Women who, after undergoing multiple pregnancies, exhibit a loss of their waistline and have distended abdominal skin and muscles, can regain their initial tone through tummy tuck. Along with cases of severe weight loss, this group is the one that most frequently requests this surgery.
It should be noted that tummy tuckalso improves the loss of skin elasticity due to aging and has the advantage of removing any previous scars below the navel (for example, from cesarean sections).
BMI or Body Mass Index is derived from the weight and height of a person. In plastic surgery, BMI is important because it helps the surgeon determine if a patient is a good or a bad candidate for a body contouring procedure. And although it is not the only thing that determines if a patient can undergo an aesthetic procedure, BMI is quite effective to rule out some patients from the OR. Normal or optimal values are below 28. (normal: 20 to 25). Having a higher BMI does not always mean you can't get a body contouring procedure. Still, most of the times, patients with BMI above 28 have to undergo some dietary changes or weight loss procedures before plastic surgery.
The tummy tuck can reduce weight when combined with liposuction due to the effect of fat removal. It is also important to mention that removing skin and fat from the abdomen with the procedure can reduce weight by 2 to 5 pounds. However, the tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure per se.
While it is possible to get pregnant after a tummy tuck, it is advisable to plan the surgery after you have completed your family to maintain the best results. Always consult with your healthcare providers to make informed decisions based on your specific circumstances.
A tummy tuck in Mexico can be safe if performed by a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon in a reputable clinic or hospital. Mexico has many experienced surgeons and modern medical facilities, often at a lower cost than in the U.S. However, it's crucial to thoroughly research the surgeon's credentials and the facility's accreditation. Prioritize safety and quality over cost savings to ensure the best possible outcome.
Yes, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can effectively reduce loose skin on your belly. This surgical procedure involves removing excess skin and fat from the abdominal area, and tightening the underlying muscles. It is particularly beneficial for individuals who have loose, sagging skin due to significant weight loss or pregnancy. The result is a smoother, firmer abdominal profile. However, it's essential to have a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your specific situation and goals.
Yes, you can get a tummy tuck and liposuction at the same time. Combining these procedures is common and can enhance overall results. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens abdominal muscles, while liposuction targets and removes localized fat deposits, contouring the body more effectively.
Drains are not always necessary after liposuction, but their use depends on the procedure's extent and the surgeon's preference. Smaller liposuction areas often do not require drains, while larger volume liposuction might benefit from them to manage fluid buildup and reduce swelling. Some techniques, like tumescent liposuction, typically minimize the need for drains by reducing bleeding and fluid accumulation. Additionally, if liposuction is combined with other procedures like a tummy tuck, drains are more commonly used.
